New anti-gun control ads that feature women and LGBT citizens using guns to defend themselves are causing a stir as California considers background checks for ammo purchases.

Coalition for Civil Liberties, which is supported by the National Rifle Association, released the first of two ads on Monday, Time magazine reported.

The ad depicts a woman attempting to defend herself from an assailant in a dark parking structure with an empty handgun. It concludes with the slogan, “Take Away Our Rights, Take Away Our Life.”

The second ad, featuring a transgender character, will be released Wednesday.

The campaign opposes the Safety for All Act of 2016, backed by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, which would require background checks for ammunition sales and ban the possession of high-capacity magazines.

“Because Gavin’s latest proposal goes too far and tramples on personal freedoms, he has opened up a real opportunity for those of us who believe in more civil liberties,” Richard Grenell, the GOP operative behind the ads, told Time. “Gavin is losing the traditional Democrat coalitions like women, the working class and the LGBT community who are challenging the progressive idea that the government should be the center of our lives.”

Last month, Newsom accused the Coalition for Civil Liberties of misrepresenting the transgender community after Nicki Stallard, a transgender woman and member of The Pink Pistols LGBT gun group, appeared in a Facebook ad from the Coalition for Civil Liberties, KXTV reported.

Newsom’s comments rankled Pink Pistols leader Gwen S. Patton, who said 25 percent of her group’s LGBT members are transgender, The Sacramento Bee reported.

“The comments he made prove pretty much categorically that he has no idea what is happening in the lawful gun-owning community,” Patton said. “This is a case of stereotypes and preconceived notions driving his agenda.”

Twitter users chimed in about the controversy surrounding the Stallard meme.
