Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Goes H.A.M. On ‘faithless elector’ Who Rejected Trump

Bravo Governor Abbott.

The day after the Electoral College officially voted to make President-elect Donald Trump the next commander in chief, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) unleashed on one GOP elector who refused to support the billionaire businessman during the Monday vote.

“You’re fired!!!” Abbott tweeted Tuesday morning, tagging elector Chris Suprun.

It was not immediately clear exactly what Abbott meant by the comment. As Texas Tribune reporter Patrick Svitek pointed out via Twitter, Suprun did announce Monday that he had resigned as precinct chair of the Dallas GOP.

The Texas governor might have also been giving a wink and a nod to Trump’s signature slogan, “You’re fired,” given there were not nearly enough defectors in the Electoral College to send the election to the House of Representatives, which is the constitutional practice should neither candidate meet the 270-vote threshold to assume the presidency.

Earlier this month, Suprun published a column in the New York Times explaining why he would not be casting his ballot for Trump, despite the fact that the president-elect won the Lone Star state. In the piece, Suprun wrote that Trump “shows daily he is not qualified for the office.”

“Fifteen years ago, as a firefighter, I was part of the response to the Sept. 11 attacks against our nation,” he wrote. “That attack and this year’s election may seem unrelated, but for me the relationship becomes clearer every day.”

He also went on Fox News to explain why he could not support Trump.

As TheBlaze previously reported, though, there is little to no evidence suggesting Suprun actually was a first responder who rushed to the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, despite his claims to the contrary.

“He claimed to be a first responder with the Manassas Park Fire Department [of Virginia] on Sept. 11, 2001, and personally told us stories, ‘I was fighting fire that day at the Pentagon,’” an anonymous first responder who knows Suprun told WFAA-TV. “No, I was on a medic unit that day at the Pentagon and you make a phone call to Manassas Park and you find out that he wasn’t even employed there until October 2001.”

The news outlet followed up with a fire chief at the MPFD, who said his department never even responded to the 9/11 Pentagon attack. In addition, he said, Suprun did not start working there until  Oct. 10, 2001, one month after the terror attacks.

Suprun, for his part, argued he worked as a firefighter in Dale City, Virginia, on 9/11, but there are no records indicating such employment.

In a follow-up tweet Tuesday, Suprun slammed Abbott as being a governor who “plays into every caricature of GOP not respecting individual liberty.”
