NYC Council Members Take A Knee with Kaepernick Jersey, Sit During Pledge

All of these DISRESPECTFUL gestures STILL won’t change the fact that injustices will happen because we are human beings and we do our best to correct those injustices.

Several members of New York’s city council took a knee outside City Hall in solidarity with NFL players, and a number of them remained seated during the customary pledge of allegiance inside the chambers.
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-East Harlem) and Councilman Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush) knelt front-and-center on the steps, with a Colin Kaepernick jersey displayed between them.
Williams told the New York Observer that their protest is about “pushing back on a system of supremacy… [and] oppressive policies.”
Other prominent councilmembers who knelt included Majority Leader Jimmy van Bramer (D-Jackson Heights), Helen Rosenthal (D-Upper West Side), Debi Rose (D-Staten Island), and Inez Barron (D-Brownsville).

One of the 51-member council’s three Republicans, Councilman Joe Borelli of Staten Island tweeted a picture of himself heading to the chambers wearing an American flag tie in objection to the Democrats’ demonstration.

“If this offends you, don’t vote for me,” Borelli tweeted.

Inside the chamber, Borelli, who was President Trump’s New York State campaign co-chairman, said a majority of the council remained standing during the Pledge of Allegiance but noted there were some members who remained seated.

Councilman Bill Perkins (D-Harlem) ripped Trump after the protest, telling the Observer the former developer engaged in “racist behavior” by taking out large newspaper ads calling for capital punishment for the “Central Park Five.”
In 1989, five men were accused of raping a jogger in the park — but a decade later they were found to be wrongly convicted, and released.
