The four children who died were all girls who attended Carroll Elementary, according Flora Police Chief Paul Redmon. He said their ages range from preschool to sixth grade.

Their mother was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, Redmon said, following the fire around 3:30 a.m. at the home at 103 E. Columbia St.

He suffered burns to his face and hands. He was the initial officer on the scene of the fire and was injured while trying to save the children.

The house is actually an apartment and most of the damage is on the first floor, but there is severe smoke damage on the upper floor. Crews are expected to be working several more hours.

Indiana State Marshal Jim Greeson is on his way to the home. The Fire Marshal’s Office is taking the lead on the investigation.

This is a small town of about 2,000 people and Redmon said, “Everybody knows everybody here, and it’s just devastating when something like this happens.”
